Upright meaning

A relationship where hearts meet, and an important choice. Trust your instinctive “yes”.

Under a blazing sun an angel spreads its wings above a man and a woman standing in a garden. The Lovers is the card of deep connection: romantic love, but also close friendship and the harmony between your head and heart. It is equally a card of choice. When it appears, you may be facing a decision that shapes who you are, and the card asks you to choose from your values rather than from fear or convenience. When you choose what you truly love, you also commit to it.

Reversed meaning

Doubt or temptation is shaking your heart. Check what you really want to value.

Reversed, the Lovers point to inner conflict. You may be torn between two options, tempted by something that doesn’t fit your values, or out of step with a partner. Communication may have broken down, or a decision keeps being put off. Rather than asking which choice is safest, ask which one you could stand behind. Clarity about your own values will untangle the knot.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Leaving profit and loss aside, which way is my heart really drawn?
  • What value matters most to me in life?
  • Am I telling the people I love how I really feel?

A common misreading

The Lovers is not only a card of romance going well. At its core lies the theme of making an important choice based on your values, so in questions about work or life direction read it as a card of choice. Nor does it necessarily mean a new partner is coming; it can show harmony in an existing relationship or within yourself.

The story of this card

After learning the teachings and values of a community from the Hierophant, the traveller now faces the challenge of choosing with their own heart. Six is the number of harmony, union and choice. Until now the traveller has been a student. Here they must decide not what someone else says is right, but what they love and how they want to live. When they truly choose, they find themselves.

The Waite deck’s picture and symbols

In the Waite deck the archangel Raphael spreads his wings above a naked man and woman, recalling Adam and Eve in Eden. Behind the woman stands the Tree of Knowledge with a serpent coiled round it; behind the man, a tree with flames for leaves. A mountain rises between them, and the sun blazes overhead.

History and differences between traditions

Older decks such as the Marseille show a young man standing between two women, perhaps his mother and a bride, while Cupid aims an arrow from above: a picture of choice. Waite replaced this with the Edenic couple and the angel, shifting the focus towards sacred union. Both readings, love and choice, still live in the card.

Words for today
