Upright meaning
A time full of love and plenty. What you’ve been nurturing bears fruit.
The Empress reclines in a lush garden where wheat ripens at her feet and a stream runs through the trees. She is life in full bloom: comfort, beauty, pleasure and growth. Upright, she says that what you have been tending, whether a relationship, a project, a home or your own wellbeing, is ready to flourish. Enjoy the good things your senses offer, be generous with your care, and don’t forget to receive care in return. Creativity is especially strong under this card.
Reversed meaning
Giving too much or leaning too much throws you off balance. Make time to look after yourself.
Reversed, the Empress’s abundance gets out of balance. You may be smothering someone with care, depending on others too heavily, or indulging in comforts until they stop feeling good. Creative projects may feel blocked, or you may be neglecting yourself while looking after everyone else. Come back to the basics: rest, nourishing food, a little beauty in your day. Growth will return when the soil is cared for.

Nurture what matters, and let yourself enjoy it.
Look after yourself first; then give.
Questions to ask yourself
- What am I growing right now with time and love?
- Do I treat myself as kindly as I treat the people I love?
- Can I accept kindness and abundance gracefully?
A common misreading
The Empress is known as the “pregnancy card”, but it doesn’t necessarily mean pregnancy. It covers creating and nurturing anything: a work, a project, a relationship. Nor is it a card only about women; for anyone it means the power to nurture, to receive and to care for yourself. The theme is not luxury but abundance that satisfies the heart.
The story of this card
After learning inner stillness and intuition from the High Priestess, the traveller is invited into the Empress’s rich garden. Three is the number of creation and growth, born when one and two meet. The seed that lay quietly in the High Priestess sprouts, flowers and fruits in the Empress’s earth. Here the traveller discovers the joy of loving, nurturing and tasting the world through the senses, and the safety of being accepted without conditions.
The Waite deck’s picture and symbols
In the Waite deck the Empress sits on cushions in a forest clearing, crowned with twelve stars. Her robe is patterned with pomegranates, a symbol of fertility, and a heart-shaped shield bearing the sign of Venus rests beside her. Ripe wheat grows in front of her and a waterfall feeds a stream behind, showing nature’s endless flow.
History and differences between traditions
In the earliest decks she is simply the Empress, a ruler with a shield bearing an eagle, the partner of the Emperor. The Golden Dawn linked her with Venus and Daleth, the door, and the Waite deck turned her from a political ruler into an earth mother surrounded by nature, the image most readers know today.
Words for today
I am allowed to receive and enjoy abundance.
Caring for myself is part of caring for others.
