Upright meaning

Take on responsibility and the lead, and the situation settles.

The Emperor sits on a stone throne carved with rams’ heads, armour under his robe, a barren mountain range behind him. Where the Empress grows, the Emperor protects and organises. Upright, this card asks you to take charge: set goals, make a plan, draw clear boundaries and stick to them. Structure isn’t the enemy of freedom here; it is what lets good things last. You may also meet a supportive figure of authority, such as a boss, a mentor or an institution, who offers stability.

Reversed meaning

Control or stubbornness is causing friction. Rethink how you use your power.

Reversed, structure turns rigid. Someone, perhaps you, may be controlling, inflexible or quick to anger, or there may be a clash with a boss or parent. The opposite is possible too: a lack of discipline, avoiding responsibility, or a leader who won’t lead. Ask whether you are holding on too tightly or not holding on at all, and use your power to protect rather than to dominate.

Questions to ask yourself

  • What should I take responsibility for right now?
  • What rules or structures would help me feel secure?
  • Am I using my power to protect, or to hold others down?

A common misreading

The Emperor is often read as a frightening, cold tyrant, but upright he is a stable card of responsibility and protection. His controlling, stubborn side mainly appears reversed or in combination with other cards. Nor does he only mean men or fathers; for anyone, he is the power to take charge of your own life and guard your boundaries.

The story of this card

Raised in the Empress’s garden, the traveller now stands before the Emperor’s throne. Four is the number of the square and the four walls: stability, structure, foundations. Where the Empress lets life grow freely, the Emperor protects its fruits and gives them order in society. Here the traveller learns to take charge, to decide, to take responsibility and to make rules. But outward order alone can’t satisfy the heart, and next comes the Hierophant.

The Waite deck’s picture and symbols

In the Waite deck the Emperor wears red over a suit of armour and sits on a grey stone throne decorated with four rams’ heads, the sign of Aries. He holds an ankh-topped sceptre and an orb. Behind him rise bare orange mountains: a hard, unyielding landscape that shows the strength and sternness of his rule.

History and differences between traditions

The Emperor has appeared in the trumps since the earliest Italian decks, usually with the eagle of the Holy Roman Empire. The Golden Dawn tied him to Aries and to the letter Heh; Crowley later swapped him with the Star, linking him to Tzaddi. Waite kept the traditional attribution and added the rams to underline the Aries connection.
