Upright meaning
Your quiet intuition knows the answer. Take your time to watch and learn.
The High Priestess sits between two pillars, one dark and one light, guarding a veil behind which lies water and mystery. Upright, she asks you to stop pushing and start noticing. This is a time to gather information, study, and pay attention to dreams, hunches and the feelings you can’t yet put into words. Not everything needs to be decided today. Some facts are still hidden, and they will come to light in their own time. Trust the knowing that arrives in quiet moments.
Reversed meaning
You’re overthinking and your mind is tense. Don’t bottle up your feelings; loosen up a little.
Reversed, the inner quiet turns into tension. You may be second-guessing everything, cutting yourself off from others, or refusing to listen to your feelings because they are inconvenient. Secrets can become a burden, whether you are keeping them or sensing that someone else is. Let a little air in: talk to someone you trust, write down what you feel, and give your intuition room to speak again.

Questions to ask yourself
- What do I already know, but haven’t admitted?
- When I’m quiet, what does the voice deep inside me say?
- Do I need to act now, or to wait?
A common misreading
The High Priestess is not a card of doing nothing or being passive. It is an active kind of waiting: stopping to observe, learn and sharpen your intuition. And although it is a card of secrets, it doesn’t necessarily mean someone is lying to you. Read it as a stage where some information hasn’t yet been revealed, and avoid jumping to conclusions.
The story of this card
Having learned from the Magician how to act on the world, the traveller now stands before the High Priestess. Two is the number of receptivity, of pairs and of the inner world, and here the traveller learns a second power: sensing without moving. She guards the entrance to the unseen world behind her, and teaches that you don’t need to know everything right now, and that there is real wisdom in intuition, dreams and silence.
The Waite deck’s picture and symbols
In the Waite deck she sits between the pillars of Solomon’s Temple, marked B and J (Boaz and Jachin), black and white. A veil embroidered with pomegranates hangs behind her, half hiding a stretch of water. She holds a scroll marked TORA, partly covered by her robe, and a crescent moon lies at her feet. Her crown, a full moon between two crescents, recalls the goddess Isis.
History and differences between traditions
In Italian decks she was “la Papessa”, the female pope, sometimes linked with the legend of Pope Joan or with Sister Manfreda, a woman elected pope by a heretical sect. The Marseille deck kept her as La Papesse. Later occultists, uneasy with the image, recast her as a priestess of hidden wisdom, and the Waite deck renamed her the High Priestess.
