Inborn energy numbers, kizu-hō and hachimon-hō in Sanmeigaku

Sanmeigaku sometimes puts a number on how strong each of the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) is in your chart. This is the inborn energy number (sententeki enerugī sū). Placing those numbers on the compass and looking at the shape they make is the work of kizu-hō (the energy-map method) and hachimon-hō (the eight-gate method).

1.Scores of the twelve subordinate stars
The twelve subordinate stars each have a score for the strength of their energy.
| Star | Score |
|---|---|
| Tenshō | 12 |
| Tenroku | 11 |
| Tennan | 10 |
| Tenki | 9 |
| Tendō | 8 |
| Tenkō | 7 |
| Ten’in | 6 |
| Tenko (天庫) | 5 |
| Tenko (天胡) | 4 |
| Tenpō | 3 |
| Tenkyoku | 2 |
| Tenchi | 1 |
2.What the energy number is
The energy number turns the strength of each element into a figure, using the stems in your chart and the scores of the twelve subordinate stars. The figure for each element is that element’s energy, and all of them together make your total energy. The “engine size”, “width” and “speed” shown in the results are guides to how large your energy is, how wide the imbalance between your elements is, and how sharp that imbalance is.
3.Kizu-hō
Place the energy of each element on the compass, with Wood in the east, Fire in the south, Earth in the center, Metal in the west and Water in the north, and see whether the vertical line (north + south) or the horizontal line (east + west) is bigger.
4.Hachimon-hō
Put your day stem in the center and set the directions by their element relationship to it.
| Direction | Element placed there |
|---|---|
| Center | The day stem’s element |
| North | The element that produces the day stem |
| South | The element the day stem produces |
| East | The element the day stem controls |
| West | The element that controls the day stem |
The largest direction gives your type: north is the Genbu (black tortoise) type, east Seiryū (blue dragon), south Suzaku (vermilion bird), west Byakko (white tiger), and the center Tōda (the flying serpent). You then compare east + south with west + north for the yang or yin type, and north + south with east + west for the forward or reverse type. These are different from the eight gates (Kyūmon, Seimon and so on) of Qimen Dunjia.
5.Find your own energy numbers
The Sanmeigaku reading (Japanese) shows your energy numbers by stem and by element, your engine size, width and speed, and the kizu-hō and hachimon-hō diagrams. For the meaning of the elements themselves, see the five elements.
