The cosmic chart (uchūban) of Sanmeigaku

Published

The cosmic chart (uchūban) takes the three eto of your chart, places them on a circle of the sixty eto and joins them with lines. The shape and size of the resulting triangle are said to show how wide your range of action and outlook is.

1.How it is laid out

Number the sixty eto from Kinoe-ne (甲子) = 1, Kinoto-ushi (乙丑) = 2 and so on to Mizunoto-i (癸亥) = 60. Put 1 (Kinoe-ne) at the top of the circle and lay out all sixty clockwise, 6° apart. Mark the numbers of your year, month and day pillars, and join the three points.

2.Reading the shape

  • The larger the triangle, the wider your range of action and interests are said to be.
  • Three points close together in a small triangle suggest a type who concentrates on one field.
  • If two pillars have the same eto, you get a line; if all three are the same, a single point.

3.Unusual eto

Some of the sixty eto, whose stem and branch combine in a distinctive way, are called unusual eto (ijō kanshi). They are not good or bad; they mark a group in which individuality tends to come out strongly. The Sanmeigaku reading also shows whether any of your year, month and day eto is one of them.

4.Draw your own cosmic chart
