The ten gods (tsūhensei) of Four Pillars of Destiny

The ten gods (tsūhensei) are the stars that show how each of the other stems relates to your day stem, the center of the chart and the stand-in for you. Five element relationships (the same, producing, controlling, controlled by, produced by), combined with whether the yin and yang are the same or different, give ten kinds.

1.How to find them
| Relationship to the day stem | Same yin/yang | Different yin/yang |
|---|---|---|
| Same element | Hiken (比肩) | Gōzai (劫財) |
| Element the day stem produces | Shokujin (食神) | Shōkan (傷官) |
| Element the day stem controls | Henzai (偏財) | Seizai (正財) |
| Element that controls the day stem | Henkan (偏官) | Seikan (正官) |
| Element that produces the day stem | Hen’in (偏印) | Injū (印綬) |
If your day stem is Kinoe (甲, yang Wood), for example, Hinoe (丙, yang Fire) is “Fire produced by Wood, same yin/yang”, so it is Shokujin, and Hinoto (丁, yin Fire) is Shōkan.
2.The meaning of the ten gods
Hiken: the star of independence
A companion of the same temperament as you. Steady and strong at the core, you aim to see things through on your own strength without leaning on others.
Gōzai: the star of rivalry and cooperation
A companion of the same element but different yin/yang, one you compete with. You hate to lose, and have the power to draw others in and move big things.
Shokujin: the star of enjoyment
Expression and joy that flow naturally out of you. Easy-going, you have a bond with eating, playing and entertaining people.
Shōkan: the star of sensibility
A sharp eye and a critical mind. With a perfectionist’s delicacy, this star tends to shine in the arts and specialist skills.
Henzai: the star of moving money and connections
What you gain by reaching out. Sociable and eager to please, you move people and money on a wide scale.
Seizai: the star of steady wealth
Wealth built up little by little. Earnest and meticulous, you have a stability that protects home and daily life.
Henkan: the star of action
A strong force coming at you. Quick to decide, you have the courage and speed to charge at difficulties. It is also called Shichisatsu (七殺, “seven killings”).
Seikan: the star of responsibility
Order and honor. Polite and law-abiding, you carry out the role you are given properly.
Hen’in: the star of inspiration
Wisdom that doesn’t fit the mold. Strongly curious, you are drawn to the unusual and to new fields.
Injū: the star of learning
The power that nurtures you. Intellectual, you are helped by knowledge you have built up, such as study, tradition and qualifications.
3.Reading them in a chart
The ten gods that appear most in a chart are said to show most clearly as your personality. The ten gods of the month pillar (the month stem and the hidden stem of the month branch) are given particular weight for your public face and your tendencies at work.
The ten gods describe the same relationships as Sanmeigaku’s ten main stars: Hiken = Kansaku, Gōzai = Sekimon, Shokujin = Hōkaku, Shōkan = Chōjo, Henzai = Rokuzon, Seizai = Shiroku, Henkan = Shaki, Seikan = Kengyū, Hen’in = Ryūkō and Injū = Gyokudō.
