The yang chart (yōsen) of Sanmeigaku: reading the body star chart

The yang chart (yōsen) takes stars from the eto of your yin chart and arranges them in the shape of a human body. It is also called the body star chart (jintai seizu). Its strength is that it shows, through star names, character and talents that are hard to read from the characters of the eto alone.

1.Nine squares and two kinds of star
The body star chart is a 3×3 grid. The five squares that form a cross hold the ten main stars, three corners hold the twelve subordinate stars, and the last square (the right shoulder) holds a companion star as a supplementary star.
| Left as you look | Middle | Right as you look | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | (Right shoulder: this site shows a companion star here as a supplement) | Head (north) | Left shoulder |
| Middle | Right hand (west) | Chest (center) | Left hand (east) |
| Bottom | Right foot | Belly (south) | Left foot |
The chart is drawn as a person facing you, so the right hand and right foot are on the left as you look at it.
2.The five positions of the main stars
The ten main stars come from the relationship between your day stem and each other stem.
- Head (north): day stem and year stem. Your relationship with superiors and parents; yourself when young.
- Chest (center): day stem and the hidden stem of the month branch. Called the central star, it is your essential nature and the axis of how you live.
- Belly (south): day stem and month stem. Your relationship with juniors and children; yourself in later life.
- Left hand (east): day stem and the hidden stem of the year branch. Friends and siblings, and the face you show the outside world.
- Right hand (west): day stem and the hidden stem of the day branch. Your spouse and home, and the face you show those closest to you.
The meanings of the stars are listed in the ten main stars.
3.The three positions of the subordinate stars
The twelve subordinate stars come from your day stem and the branches of the year, month and day, and show your energy in each stage of life.
- Left shoulder: from the year branch. Early life (roughly ages 0 to 30).
- Left foot: from the month branch. Middle life (around 30 to 60).
- Right foot: from the day branch. Later life (from around 60).
The meanings of the twelve stars are in the twelve subordinate stars.
4.Start with the central star
When reading a body star chart, look first at the central star on the chest, because it is said to show you as you are when you are being yourself. Then check whether any star appears two or more times, and how the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) are spread out, and a picture of the person emerges.
Readers differ on the finer points of reading star combinations. This site offers a starting point: where the stars sit and what they basically mean.
5.Draw your own body star chart
Enter your date of birth in the Sanmeigaku reading (Japanese) to see the stars in all nine squares, your central star and your void at once.
