Upright meaning

A time of awakening and revival. Past efforts pay off and the door to another try opens.

An angel blows a trumpet from the clouds, and people rise from their coffins with arms outstretched. Judgement is a wake-up call. Upright, it marks a moment of reckoning and renewal: you see your life clearly, accept what has been and answer a calling to something new. Past efforts may finally be recognised, or a second chance may appear. Big decisions made now come from a deeper place than usual. Listen to what is calling you.

Reversed meaning

You’re caught up in regrets about the past. Forgive yourself just once more.

Reversed, the call goes unanswered. You may be held back by regret, guilt or fear of judgement, unable to decide or to move on from the past. Self-criticism can be loud. Remember that this card is about forgiveness as much as judgement. Let yourself learn from what happened and then step forward.

  • If I could start again, what would I do differently?

A common misreading

Judgement isn’t about being punished or condemned. It is about awakening, forgiveness and rebirth. Reversed, it’s less about doom than about the courage to let go of the past.

The story of this card

Warmed by the Sun, the traveller hears the trumpet of Judgement. Twenty reduces to two, the High Priestess: the inner voice now speaks out loud. The traveller rises, sees their whole journey with new eyes and answers the call to become whole, standing at the threshold of the World.

The Waite deck’s picture and symbols

In the Waite deck the archangel Gabriel blows a trumpet hung with a white flag bearing a red cross. Below, grey-skinned men, women and children rise from coffins floating on water, arms raised in wonder. Snow-capped mountains stand in the background.

History and differences between traditions

The card has shown the Last Judgement since the earliest decks, with angels sounding trumpets over the rising dead. Crowley renamed it “The Aeon” to stand for the start of a new age. Many modern readers see it as a personal awakening rather than a religious event.
