Upright meaning
You feel bored and dissatisfied. You may be overlooking a chance in front of you.
A young man sits under a tree with his arms crossed, staring at three cups before him, while a hand from a cloud offers a fourth that he doesn’t see. The Four of Cups is apathy and discontent: having enough but not feeling satisfied, or being so focused on what’s missing that you miss what’s offered. Upright, it asks you to look up and notice.
Reversed meaning
New interest stirs. You’re ready to move out of the rut.
Reversed, you begin to wake up. Interest returns, you notice an opportunity or you decide to change what isn’t working. Say yes to something new.

- What would make me feel alive again?
- Am I focusing on what’s missing?
A common misreading
The Four of Cups isn’t only negative. A period of reflection can be healthy, as long as it doesn’t become stagnation.
The story of this card
Four is stability, but in water it turns stagnant. Satisfaction becomes boredom, and the heart must look for new life.
The Waite deck’s picture and symbols
In the Waite deck a young man sits under a tree, arms folded, gazing at three cups on the grass. A hand from a cloud offers him a fourth cup he doesn’t notice.
History and differences between traditions
The Golden Dawn title Lord of Blended Pleasure suggests pleasure mixed with dissatisfaction. Crowley called it Luxury.
