Eastern and Western fortune-telling compared

Both the Eastern eto and the Western zodiac use the number 12, but what they measure is completely different.
The animals follow years; the signs follow seasons
The twelve animals turn mainly by year, so everyone born in the same year shares an animal. The twelve zodiac signs divide the sun’s yearly path into twelve, so your sign depends on the month and day you were born.
The East reads the calendar; the West reads the sky
The eto and Nine Star Ki read signs in a calendar, a calendar that was itself built on the movements of the sun and moon. Western and Indian astrology calculate where the sun, moon and planets actually were at the moment of birth. That said, Japan’s Heian-period Sukuyōdō did calculate real planetary positions, and the twelve signs reached Japan together with the Buddhist Sukuyō sutra.
What each does best

| Eto and Four Pillars | Your innate nature, the balance of the five elements, the big currents of life |
| Nine Star Ki | Each year’s fortune, lucky directions, timing moves and trips |
| Western astrology | Psychological tendencies, talents, patterns in relationships |
| Indian astrology | The periods of fate (dasha), timing of marriage and career |
