What is Nine Star Ki (kyūsei kigaku)?

Published

Nine Star Ki (kyūsei kigaku) reads your personality, fortune and lucky directions from the main star of your birth year, and it is very popular in Japan. The nine stars (shihaku kyūsei) come from Chinese divination, and there were already nine-star methods for house layout and directions in Edo-period Japan. In the Taishō era, Sonoda Shinjirō is said to have organised them into a system he called kigaku.

1.What are the nine stars?

The nine stars began as a 3×3 square of numbers in which every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15: a magic square. The arrangement of numbers in nine palaces was known in the Han dynasty, and from the Song dynasty on it was called the Luoshu (rakusho in Japanese). Combining this arrangement with the five elements and colors gave the nine stars.

2.How to find your main star

Your main star is set by your year of birth, with the year changing at Risshun. To work it out, add the digits of the year until you have one digit, then subtract that from 11 (if the answer is 10, subtract 9 more to get 1).

Example: born in 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1 → 11 − 1 = 10 → 10 − 9 = 1 (One White Water Star)

Nine Star Ki charts are traditionally drawn with south at the top. Each year a different star moves into the center (the chūgū, central palace), and the others move with it. This yearly layout is the “year chart”. In 2026, the One White Water Star is in the center.

4.Lucky and unlucky directions

A direction holding a star that gets on well with your main star is lucky. But some directions are unlucky: the direction of the Five Yellow Earth Star (Goō-satsu), the one opposite it (Ankensatsu), the direction of your own star (Honmei-satsu) and the one opposite (Honmei-tekisatsu), and the direction opposite the year’s animal (Saiha).

Look up your main star, month star and this year’s lucky directions in the Nine Star Ki reading.
