The years in the table are birth years. Some shrines and temples switch to the new year on 1 January, others at Risshun (the day after Setsubun).
What is yakudoshi?
Yakudoshi are ages at which misfortune is said to come more easily, turning points in life. Men’s are usually 25, 42 and 61 and women’s 19, 33, 37 and 61, all in kazoe-doshi (you are 1 at birth and gain a year each New Year). 42 for men and 33 for women are the great yakudoshi (taiyaku). The years before and after are called mae-yaku and ato-yaku.
The ages can differ by region and shrine. Many people receive a purification (yakubarai) at a shrine or temple at the start of the year, before Setsubun.
