Power stones: meanings and how to choose

Published

Power stones are natural stones worn like charms or displayed in a room for the power they are said to hold. Gems and minerals have long been given special meanings, and the idea of birthstones is one example.

First, a note

The meanings of power stones come from lore and culture. They don’t cure illness or guarantee income. Enjoy them as emotional support and as accessories.

2.Choosing by wish

  • Love and good matches: rose quartz, moonstone, rhodochrosite
  • Money: citrine, tiger’s eye, rutilated quartz
  • Work and study: tiger’s eye, lapis lazuli, fluorite
  • Peace of mind: amethyst, clear quartz, aquamarine
  • Protection: onyx, black tourmaline, clear quartz

When you can’t decide, it is said to be best to choose the stone you are drawn to at a glance.

3.Colors and the five elements

You can also think of a stone’s color in terms of the five elements: green is Wood, red Fire, yellow and brown Earth, white and gold Metal, black and navy Water. Your own element comes from the day stem in your birth chart (Japanese) (Kinoe and Kinoto are Wood, Hinoe and Hinoto Fire, Tsuchinoe and Tsuchinoto Earth, Kanoe and Kanoto Metal, Mizunoe and Mizunoto Water).

Your element Stones of your color Supporting stones
Wood Aventurine, jade Lapis lazuli, onyx (Water)
Fire Carnelian, garnet Aventurine, jade (Wood)
Earth Tiger’s eye, citrine Carnelian, garnet (Fire)
Metal Clear quartz, moonstone Tiger’s eye, citrine (Earth)
Water Onyx, lapis lazuli Clear quartz, moonstone (Metal)

The “supporting element” is the one that produces yours in the generating cycle. To choose by your Nine Star Ki main star, see feng shui by the five elements, and for color meanings, feng shui colors.

4.How to cleanse them

Power stones are said to take on the energy of their owner, so it is good to cleanse them now and then.

Method Tips
Moonlight Leave on a windowsill on the night of the full moon. Works for almost all stones
Quartz cluster Rest the stone on a quartz cluster
Sage or incense Pass it through the smoke
Sound (tuning fork, bell) Let it hear a clear tone
Running water, salt Some stones discolor or deteriorate; take care

Amethyst and rose quartz fade easily in sunlight, and turquoise and malachite don’t like water or salt, so some methods are best avoided for some stones. Purification in general is covered in ways to purify.

5.Birthstones too

The stones for each birth month are collected in birthstones by month. They make good gifts.

When choosing natural stones

It is reassuring to buy from a shop that explains where a stone comes from and how it has been treated (dyed, heated and so on). Yorozu Goyomi’s shop is also preparing natural stones and craft items.

6.FAQ

Which wrist should I wear a power stone bracelet on?

A common idea is that the left hand receives wishes and energy and the right hand lets go of what you don’t need. Some choose the left for wishes and the right for protection, but whichever is comfortable is fine.

Is it bad if my power stone breaks?

It is usually taken to mean the stone took a blow in your place, or has done its job. Let it go with thanks, or ask a shrine or the shop for advice.
