Wanting a life without money worries is something many people share. Feng shui has lots of lore about money luck. Here are the best-known pieces, offered as everyday wisdom.

Feng shui offers hints for living comfortably. It doesn’t promise more income or savings. Make decisions about money together with a realistic plan.
1.What “yellow in the west” means
The well-known Japanese feng shui saying “yellow in the west” comes from the fact that west is the direction of the Metal element and yellow is the color of Earth. Earth produces Metal in the generating cycle, so the idea is that yellow in the west nurtures Metal qi.
Try it with things that are easy to bring in, like curtains, cushions or flowers. Too much yellow feels restless, though, so combining it with white or beige is a good idea.
2.Room arrangements said to be good for money
- Keep the entrance clean: the mouth of qi is said to matter for money luck too. → Feng shui for the entrance
- Keep water areas clean: especially the toilet and kitchen. → Feng shui for kitchens and bathrooms
- Look after the west rooms: soften the strong afternoon sun through west windows with curtains.
- “Save” in the north: north is the direction of savings. Make it a quiet, warm space; one idea is to keep bankbooks and important papers in a drawer in the north.
3.Wallet feng shui
- Color: yellow and gold are said to mean money luck, brown and beige “saving”, and black “protecting”. Some say to avoid red because of being “in the red” (in Japanese too, a deficit is akaji, “red letters”), though other schools don’t worry about it.
- Shape: a well-known idea is that a long wallet, which holds notes without folding them, is best.
- Tidy the contents: don’t let receipts and point cards pile up; sort them often.
- Lifespan: it is sometimes said to be best to replace a wallet one to three years after you start using it.
- The day you start using it: many choose a lucky day such as Ichiryū-manbai-bi, Tenshabi or a Tiger day. → The kinds of lucky days, the lucky day calendar, and good days to buy or start a wallet in 2026 and 2027. (A “spring wallet”, started between Risshun and the spring equinox, is popular too.)
4.Habits said to be good for money
- Take a quick look through your wallet every day
- Write down what you spend to see where it goes
- Let go of things at home you don’t need
- Spend money with gratitude
Feng shui lore overlaps with the basics of getting on well with money: taking care of things, keeping things tidy and paying attention to flow. Try it and enjoy it.
