How to read this calendar

  • Day eto: each day carries one of the 60 stem-and-branch combinations, which repeat every 60 days.
  • Rokuyō: the six-day cycle used for weddings and funerals: Senshō (early win: good in the morning), Tomobiki (pulling friends: good except at noon, avoided for funerals), Senbu (early loss: good in the afternoon), Butsumetsu (Buddha's death: the least lucky day), Taian (great peace: good all day), Shakkō (red mouth: good only around noon).
  • Choku: the twelve jūni-choku read the day by where the handle of the Big Dipper points. The day whose branch matches the month is Tatsu (establish), and the cycle runs through to Tozu (close). On the first day of a solar month the previous choku repeats.
  • Star: the day’s Nine Star Ki star (nikka kyūsei). The order switches between ascending and descending at the Kinoe-ne day nearest each solstice.
  • Almanac notes and selected days: traditional lucky and unlucky notes. They differ between traditions; the calculation is explained in How the calendar is calculated.
